ATHENS, Jun 9, 2022 (AFP) - A Greek regional court has ordered the return to Iran of Iranian oil that was confiscated in the country, at the request of the United States, in a Russian oil tanker.According to a Greek government source, Athens hopes that with this decision, Tehran will release two captured Greek oil tankers in retaliation. The decision of the Halkida appeals court has not yet been officially published, the source told AFP."The court ruled that the cargo should be released. The Greek government was not involved," said the same source. On April 19, Greek Greek authorities immobilized the Russian oil tanker "Pegas" off the coast of the island of Euboea, renamed a few days later as "Lana", to follow European sanctions imposed due to the war in Ukraine.According to information released on the date, the ship was carrying 115,000 tons of Iranian oil.The oil was later seized at the request of American justice and began to be transferred to a ship chartered by Washington."Half of the cargo is still on the ship," the Greek government official said on Thursday. On May 27, the Revolutionary Guard, the ideological army of the Islamic Republic, announced the seizure of two Greek-flagged oil tankers in the Gulf. The Iranian supreme leader explained on Saturday that this was a reprisal measure against Greece because the country had "stolen" Iranian oil.Tehran also accused Washington of "clear violation of maritime law and international conventions".The US government imposes economic sanctions on Iran that affect its oil exports.jph/cm/clr/es/meb/fpID: {{comments.info.id}} URL: {{comments.info.url}}Please try again later. It is not possible to post new comments.Only subscribers can read and commentNot a subscriber yet?Subscribe now.If you are already a UOL subscriber, log in.The author of the message, not UOL, is responsible for the comment.Read the terms of use
