BACOLOD CITY – Persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) at the Metro Bacolod District Jail (MBDJ)-female dormitory here have thought of a way to help frontliners in the fight against the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic while making a living for themselves.
Insp. Ma. Lorelie Dimaculangan, jail warden, said that the production of personal protective equipment (PPEs) was the newest livelihood project that they introduced to the PDLs, which could also help them support their families, and provide their own needs while inside the jail.
Dimaculangan said three PDLs, who were already equipped with the skills in sewing, were trained in a one-day PPE production online course of the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) last month.
Through the TESDA’s online training course, the three PDLs were able to enhance their skills in the production of PPE gowns, PPE caps, and cotton face masks, she added.
Dimaculangan said 20 PPE gowns were already sewn by the PDLs, and nine of these were already donated.
Six were given to the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP)-Negros Occidental Swabbing Team, two at South Hills Academy Building, a Department of Health (DOH) Accredited Quarantine Facility here, and one at Negros Occidental District Jail (NODJ) Quarantine Facility in Bago City.
Dimaculangan said PPE gowns were made of medical grade non-woven fabric.
These are water resistant and washable that could also be used against strong heat and chemical reactions, she added. They also have microfiber cotton face masks.
She said that materials were purchased online through the jail’s mini store inside the facility, and this will be refunded by the PDL through purchase orders from clients.
The PPEs could be ordered through the Metro Bacolod District Jail Female Dormitory Facebook page.
She said they can also provide labor work for those who already have materials, and are interested to have their PPEs sewn by the PDLs. The jail sells the PPE gowns in bulk orders for P250 each, and P375-400 for two PPE suits.
